The Idiot(s) to open Filmfest Hamburg 2026

Gold Rush Pictures’ The Idiot(s) will open the 34th Filmfest Hamburg on 24 September 2026, marking the film’s European premiere. Directed by Małgorzata Szumowska and Michał Englert, the film stars Aimee Lou Wood and Johnny Flynn as newlyweds Anna and Fyodor Dostoevsky. Their honeymoon brings them to a German spa town, where Fyodor gambles away their limited funds, pursues other women and struggles to write - while Anna quietly holds their precarious life together.

Placing Anna’s intelligence and determination at the centre of the story, The Idiot(s) playfully dismantles the mythology of the solitary male genius and reveals the woman behind one of literature’s most celebrated figures.

As reported by ScreenDaily, the Hamburg opening follows the film’s world premiere at Telluride and Canadian premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Szumowska and Englert are expected to attend the European premiere alongside cast members Aimee Lou Wood, Vicky Krieps and Christian Friedel.

Filmfest Hamburg runs from 24 September to 3 October 2026, presenting more than 120 productions from around the world.
