The Idiot(s) selected for BFI London Film Festival Official Competition
Gold Rush Pictures’ The Idiot(s) has been selected for the Official Competition at the 70th BFI London Film Festival, taking place from 7–18 October 2026.
Directed by Małgorzata Szumowska and Michał Englert, the film joins ten titles selected from around the world to compete for the festival’s prestigious Best Film Award.
The Idiot(s) stars Aimee Lou Wood and Johnny Flynn as Anna and Fyodor Dostoevsky. Living in self-imposed exile in Germany, the newly married couple face mounting debts as Fyodor struggles with gambling, alcohol and writer’s block. While he searches for the inspiration to complete his next novel, Anna fights to hold their life together and save them from destitution.
Both acerbic period comedy and unconventional love story, The Idiot(s) challenges the mythology of the solitary male genius and places the intelligent, determined woman beside him at the centre of the narrative.
The BFI describes Wood and Flynn as “superb” in a film that is both “acerbic and joyful”. The Official Competition selection has also received prominent international coverage from Deadline and Variety.
The Idiot(s) is a Gold Rush Pictures and Hype Studios production, with international sales handled by The Match Factory.
